Food Safety Modernization Act

The The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) National Produce Safety Rule was finalized and put into effect by the FDA in November 2015. The rule establishes, for the first time, science-based minimum standards for the safe growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of fruits and vegetables grown for human consumption. 

If you grow and sell fresh fruits and vegetables, you may be subject to the rule and its provisions. Compliance dates vary based on your size. Use the information in the links to the right to understand if and how your operation will be impacted by the rule.

NOTE: UMN Extension will be co-hosting the first Produce Safety Alliance (PSA) Grower Training Course in January 2018 in St. Cloud MN and March 2018 in Monticello,MN. More details will follow. Attending a training is one way to satisfy the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirement outlined in § 112.22(c) that requires ‘At least one supervisor or responsible party for your farm must have successfully completed food safety training at least equivalent to that received under standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by the Food and Drug Administration.’
